Stress, anxiety, and depression may trigger a variety of skin conditions - from hives to hair loss. But according to a recent Belgian study, many dermatologist fail to identify these emotional triggers. Researchers distributed questionnaires to 554 first-time patients at one dermatology clinic.

They also asked the ten staff dermatologists about each patient's diagnosis, recent stressful events in her life, and any psychological problems she was experiencing. The researchers found that many of the dermatologists were not aware that their patients were experiencing any psychological problems at all - a factor that, in turn, prevents patients from understanding and possibly preventing, their skin problems.

Specifically, the doctors failed to recognize that 65 percent of patients had family problems and 52 percent of patients were showing symptoms of depression. It is critical for a dermatologist to ask the right questions but it is also important for a patient to speak up about what been bothering her.

Suss Out Your Skin Type ...
Perform these simple at-home tests to find out which category you fall into.

Oily
Grab a Polaroid camera and have a friend take a close-up of your face. If your forehead looks shiny in the photo, you probably have oily skin.

Sensitive
Jog in place for about three minutes. If your face, neck or chest become red and blotchy, your skin is on the sensitive side.

Dry
Press a piece of household adhesive tape against your chin or cheek. If there are flakes on the tape when you remove it, your skin is dry.

Combination
Blot your forehead or nose with a tissue. Then do the tape test above. If the tissue has residue and the tape has flakes you have combo skin.

Clean Skin Is Beautiful Skin
Follow this simple routine each night to keep your skin clean and glowing.

  • Take a dab of a cleansing cream and massage it on your face in an upward, circular motion.

  • When your skin has completely absorbed the cleanser, wipe your face with a tissue keeping the motion upward.

  • Wash your face with cold water and soap.

  • Apply a cold cream.
